The No. 6 seed Tennessee Volunteers are headed to the Elite Eight after a 76-62 win over No. 2 seed Iowa State at the United Center. Despite a crowd heavily favoring the Cyclones, Tennessee settled in after a slow start and took control of the game by the second half.
Senior forward Felix Okpara helped keep the Vols steady early, finishing the first half with three blocks. A corner 3-pointer from Nate Ament gave Tennessee its first lead at 11-10, and the teams traded runs from there.
Jaylen Carey added a dunk out of a timeout during a Tennessee run, and the Vols carried a slim 34-33 lead into halftime after Okpara hit two free throws. Iowa State guard Nate Heise led all scorers at the break with 14 points.
Tennessee came out sharper in the second half. Ament opened with another 3-pointer, and the Vols quickly built a 41-35 lead. From there, they found a rhythm on both ends and stretched the margin to double digits and the Cyclones could never catch up.
Ament finished with a team high of 18 points, while Carey recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Okpara added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Every player who touched the court for Tennessee scored; four had double-digits, and two had double-doubles. This was a full team victory.
Now, the Vols advance to the Elite Eight for the third straight year and will face No. 1 seed Michigan on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. ET.
