KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (TVC) — University of Tennessee Police responded to a crash early Saturday morning at the intersection of Cumberland Avenue and 19th Street.
Officers arrived at 3:13 a.m., according to authorities.
Boston West, 20, has been charged with evading arrest, DUI, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and additional offenses. John Yates, 21, a passenger in the vehicle, faces charges of evading arrest and public intoxication.
Witnesses at the scene said it was fortunate no one was injured.
Parker Feagins, who was working at a hot dog stand on Cumberland Avenue at the time of the crash, said the area had been crowded shortly before the incident.
“It was just a miracle that nobody got hurt,” Feagins said. “About 15 minutes before, I’d had a crowd of 20 people standing right where he came through.”
Darcy Swanson, a University of Tennessee senior who was walking along Cumberland Avenue, described hearing the vehicle before the crash.
“We heard the loud sound of a car revving its engine,” Swanson said. “We saw the car hit one side of the road, go to the other, and then hit the tree. The tree went flying in the air.”
