KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (TVC) — After an exciting week for Tennessee baseball, the Vols welcomed No. 25 Ole Miss to Knoxville, but ultimately couldn’t hang on to the past week’s momentum, falling 7-4.
The Vols played decently, but the Rebels played better.
Landon Mack found himself in the starting position on the mound tonight and pitched through five innings, allowing six runs scored as Ole Miss’s offense was able to take advantage of his pitches.
Nic Abraham took over for Mack in the sixth, going three up three down, and controlled the mound through two, only letting up one run.
Chandler Day came in at the beginning of the eighth, also going three up, three down.
And, Will Haas was the closer for Tennessee, who also went three up, three down, holding the Rebels to seven runs on the night.
Offensively, Reese Chapman started the night off hot for the Vols, knocking one down in the first inning, giving Tennessee the one-to-nothing lead, but that lead wouldn’t last.
Ole Miss battled back, scoring back-to-back home runs in the third, and silenced Tennessee’s bats until the fifth inning when Henry Ford hit a single, bringing home Jay Abernathy.
The Vols tried to rally in the seventh inning after Jay Abernathy smacked one over the fence, bringing home Levi Clark and himself, but that’s all the bats had in them tonight.
Tennessee will look to pick up the win tomorrow night, April 18, against Ole Miss and avoid losing the series. First pitch for the checkered Lindsey Nelson Stadium has been moved up to 4 p.m. ET.
