KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (TVC)– As college students juggle packed schedules, many are turning to caffeine to stay energized, but health experts warn that too much can come with serious risks.
Caffeine consumption is a daily habit for many students at the University of Tennessee, from morning coffee runs to late-night energy drinks. But recent conversations around overconsumption are raising concerns about how much is too much; especially as high-caffeine products remain widely accessible.
For some students, the effects can be alarming.
“When I would lie down, it felt like there was an elephant on my chest,” fourth-year student Nina Poznecki said. “It just started hurting a lot and felt like there was a weight on my chest.”
Experts say one of the biggest issues is a lack of transparency in labeling.
“One problem with labeling is that it’s not on labels. It’s not required,” registered dietitian Lee Murphy said. “But for now, you have to Google it.”
That lack of clear information can make it difficult for students to track how much caffeine they are consuming; especially when multiple drinks are consumed in a short period of time.
Health professionals say factors like body size and tolerance can affect how individuals react to caffeine. Consuming too much too quickly may lead to side effects such as insomnia, headaches and an increased heart rate.
Poznecki said her experience changed how she approaches caffeine.
“Do your research, or read the can before enjoying your drink,” she said.
Experts encourage students to be more mindful of their intake and consider healthier alternatives for maintaining energy throughout the day.
As caffeine continues to be a staple in college life, awareness and moderation may be key to avoiding potential health risks.
